Artists in Canada’s Provinces and Territories Based on the 2006 Census, the 27th report in the Statistical Insights on the Arts series from Hill Strategies Research, highlights key information about artists in the provinces and territories.
 
 A Statistical Profile of Artists in Canada
This report shows that there are 140,000 artists in Canada who spent more time at their art than at any other occupation in May 2006. The number of artists is slightly larger than the number of Canadians directly employed in the automotive industry (135,000). The report reveals 10 key facts about the working lives of artists in Canada.

Finances of Performing Arts Organizations in Canada in 2006-07, the 24th report in the Statistical Insights on the Arts series from Hill Strategies Research, finds that performing arts organizations generate $2.70 in revenues for every dollar received from governments. The report also shows that fundraising revenues grew the most between 1996-97 and 2006-07.

However, the report also finds that government revenues continue to represent the largest share of total revenues.

This report provides strong evidence of the social effects of culture through detailed statistical models of six social indicators: Feeling trapped in a daily routine; Volunteering; Donating; Doing a favour for a neighbour; Sense of belonging to one’s province; and Sense of belonging to Canada.  Social Effects of Culture: Exploratory Statistical Evidence
This report examines the relationship between four cultural activities and certain social phenomena, including volunteering, donating, neighbourhood connections, sense of belonging and quality of life. While the report does not claim to be definitive, some statistics in the report do show a relationship between some cultural activities and positive social engagement.
