The Impact of Arts Education on Workforce Preparation

October 17, 200517 October 2005

The National Governors’ Association has prepared this summary paper of case studies of state arts education programs for youth, including at-risk and incarcerated youth. The report concludes that “programs incorporating the arts have proven to be educational, developmentally rich, and cost-effective ways to provide students with the skills they need to be productive participants in today’s economy”.

The state arts education projects have assisted in the development of both academic skills and intangible skills, such as flexibility, problem-solving abilities and interpersonal skills. Among other strategies, the report recommends that governments bring together education policy advisors, economic development leaders, school leaders, and arts and culture officials to work towards integrating the arts into workforce development strategies.
